MORE police training exercises will take place at the closed Prestatyn Sands Holiday Park later this week.

Last Wednesday (May 1), a witness told the Journal that they saw “armed police” by the entrance to the Pontins park, on Barkby Avenue, and heard “gunshots”.

North Wales Police later confirmed that this was, in fact, a training exercise, as will be the case at the park on May 7 and 10.

The force’s specialist firearms officers often conduct training to help prepare them for real-life firearms incidents, police said.

A police spokesperson said: “Our police officers often conduct important training to help prepare them for real-life incidents.

“This training is not in relation to any specific threat.

“A training exercise is due to take place tomorrow (May 7) and on May 10 at the former Pontins site in Prestatyn – a venue which we have previously used over recent weeks.

“There is no need to be alarmed - this is a secure and closed site which is managed safely by instructors.

“Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.”

Prestatyn Sands Holiday Park closed for good on November 30, 2023, having been open since 1971.
