A CHILD was seen looking disappointed after being told they could not feed the ducks at a park after vandals carried out pointless destruction.

The vandalism occurred overnight, between April 26 and April 27, on the North West corner of Pentre Mawr Park, off Sea Road, Abergele.

Councillor Alan Hunter became aware of the damage this morning via social media. He went to the park to see the destruction first hand.

He noticed the metal railings, that had kept the rear fence safe, had been broken away and thrown in the pond. The fence had been pushed to the point where it had broken the mounting points and there was a panel removed.

Cllr Hunter said: "The metal fence had been secured with fairly strong cable ties so I suspect a knife may have been used.

"It happened overnight and l picked it up on a Facebook post on Saturday morning.

"I called it in to Conwy Council Borough Council's out of hours team just after 9am. I then went to the park to check the extent of the damage. Having seen it myself, l then called and asked for urgent attendance as a panel was missing and there was a risk that children could fall into the water."

Cllr Hunter praised the council team.

"They arrived while I was still in the park so a great response," he said.

"The team had no viable option other than to close off the platform."

Cllr Hunter added: "What really saddened me was, when l returned to the park, there was a man with a young child at the barriers. I'm guessing that part of their visit to the park was to go on the platform and feed the ducks.

"He looked like he was explaining to her that they couldn't go on the platform.

"How many more people will turn up up with children to feed the ducks? Or just sit a while only to find that vandals have stopped a simple pleasure."

North Wales Police will be approached for comment.
